For some, metaphor is merely a fancy way of talking, perhaps poetic, but generally useless. For others, all communication is metaphorical and open to a wide variety of individualistic interpretation. Somewhere between these extremes, metaphor can be seen as a complex but describable phenomenon whose interpretation is both irreducible and able to be guided and constrained.
